Oliver Lyttelton, Jolyon Sanderson and Alex Williams took part in the Marathon des Sables, one of the hardest events in the world. They crossed 150 miles of the Sahara in Morocco, carrying all their food and gear over 16 days.

During my visit I met George. George was sitting in the classroom engrossed in a mathematics problem. Using a very short stub of a pencil he studiously scribbled down columns of figures on a scrap of brown scruffy paper (a recycled paper bag).

One woman showed me a drum of plant compost, which she had made from organic waste collected from the slum, mixed with dung. She sold it as a plant compost at 20 rupees (20 pence) a kilo. She was clearly so proud to show me.

In another house an unmarried mother lived with her with two children and a sister. This house was in the process of being improved by HOPE, levelling the uneven earthen floor, on which they had slept lying on just a few cloths.
