George was sitting in the classroom engrossed in a mathematics problem. Using a very short stub of a pencil he studiously scribbled down columns of figures on a scrap of brown scruffy paper (a recycled paper bag). One woman showed me a drum of plant compost, which she had made from organic waste collected from the slum, mixed with dung. She sold it as a plant compost at 20 rupees (20 pence) a kilo. She was clearly so proud to show me.	In another house an unmarried mother lived with her with two children and a sister. This house was in the process of being improved by HOPE, levelling the uneven earthen floor, on which they had slept lying on just a few cloths.
